The World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature headed by No Plastic in Nature (NPIN) Program Manager, Mr. Julius Guirjen conducted a site visit at the Port of Cagayan de Oro’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) on April 24, 2024 to further its mission of minimizing plastic pollution of the oceans and to deliberately ascertain what further assistance they can provide to PMO MO/C in light of the recently announced projects in the city.

The Port of Cagayan de Oro was recognized by WWF as the “Best Performing Port in the Philippines” for accomplishing waste reduction goals and for actively committing, participating, and cooperating in the implementation of sustainable solutions to fight plastic pollution. A total of 21,961 kg of garbage were produced by the Port of Cagayan de Oro, with a 3% potential leakage into the environmental. Thus, Port of Cagayan de Oro, as well as Ports of Batangas, and Manila North Port have all been able to reduce their leakage of plastic waste by 51% as a result of various actions implemented in partnership with WWF over the last year. As trial locations for the WWF-Philippines NPIN campaign, the Grieg Group carried out the “Clean Ports, Clean Oceans: Improving Port Waste Management in the Philippines” project with financing from the Grieg Foundation. The creation of MRF is one of the interventions of the project which concluded in September of 2023.

WWF, a global conservation organization with over 5 million supporters, aims to preserve biological diversity, ensure sustainable use of renewable resources, and reduce pollution. Established in 1997, WWF-Philippines has implemented conservation programs to protect Asia’s biologically valuable habitats, promoting peaceful coexistence with the environment.

Further, WWF conveyed its appreciation to PMO MO/C for their unwavering commitment and support to their programs in addressing the issue of plastic leakage in our nation, specifically on the successful partnership. The PMO MO/C looks forward for more and greater projects with WWF that will not only benefit the port and its communities, but also for our Mother Earth.
