The MV Super Shuttle Ferry 21, experienced a throttle malfunction during docking maneuvers at the Port of Benoni on January 21, 2024.

The incident occurred at approximately 0645 hours when MV Super Shuttle Ferry 21 encountered difficulties with its throttle, causing the vessel to slowly drift towards the shallow portion of the channel. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, immediate coordination was initiated with the concerned shipping line, Asian Marine Transport Corp, and the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Mahinog.

Responding promptly, the PCG dispatched a team onboard the sister vessel, MV Super Shuttle Ferry 24, by 0730 hours. The PCG team quickly connected mooring lines from MV Super Shuttle Ferry 24 to MV Super Shuttle Ferry 21, commencing towing operations to safely extract the distressed vessel from its precarious position.

By 0805 hours, MV Super Shuttle Ferry 21 was successfully extracted and safely docked at Benoni Port. All 19 passengers, 20 crew members, and 3 rolling cargoes onboard were efficiently disembarked, with no reported fatalities or injuries. Remarkably, the vessel itself sustained no damage during the incident.

Following the successful rescue operation, the captain of MV Super Shuttle Ferry 21 was advised to file a Marine Protest with the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), and a copy of the protest has been attached for documentation purposes. Pending the inspection by MARINA, MV Super Shuttle Ferry 21 is temporarily docked alongside the RC Pier.

The incident underscores the importance of quick and coordinated responses in maritime emergencies. The PCG’s efficient handling of the situation averted potential risks and ensured the safety of all individuals and the vessels involved. Authorities will await the results of MARINA’s inspection to determine the root cause of the throttle malfunction and implement any necessary measures to prevent future incidents of a similar nature.
