BASEPORT, CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Port Management Office of Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro (PMO MOC) took part in an oil spill and fire emergency drill on February 5, 2025, at 1530H, underscoring its commitment to maritime safety and environmental protection. Organized by Shell Pilipinas Corp., (SPC) the exercise involved key stakeholders, including the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Safe Seas Shipping Agency Co., Inc., (Safe Seas) and Malayan Towage and Salvage Corporation (MTSC). The PMO played a central role in providing and facilitating support to the emergency responders. The drill scenario simulated an oil spill that could potentially ignite aboard a vessel. The Safe Seas and MTSC, as first responders, quickly deployed spill booms and firefighting equipment to contain and not escalate the emergency situation. The exercise also displayed the communication and coordination of SPC with its first responders, the Authority, PCG, and BFP. The drill concluded at 1600H

During the post-drill evaluation and feedback provided an opportunity to evaluate the response, focusing on strong inter-agency collaboration, rapid protocol execution, and efficient containment strategies. Also, best practices were shared and discussed, and areas for further improvement in response strategies were also highlighted. The success of the exercise demonstrated the high level of preparedness and dedication of all participants.

The success of this drill reinforces the collective commitment of all participating organizations to enhance disaster readiness and protect maritime operations. By fostering a culture of preparedness and adaptability, the agencies ensure that emergency response efforts remain efficient, minimizing risks to both human life and the environment. Insights from this exercise will help drive continuous improvements, further strengthening the portโ€™s ability to manage and respond to maritime emergencies.
