The Philippine Ports Authority Port Management Office of Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro (PPA PMO MOC), together with other local government units, national government agencies, private sectors, community stakeholders and various civil society organizations participated in the annual International Coastal Clean-up (ICC), with the theme: “Clean Seas for Blue Economy” and the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness (MANA Mo) Coastal Clean-up activity today, September 21, 2024. The activity was spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources X (DENR X) and participated by PMO MOC personnel, wherein a total of 18 trash bags with an estimated weight of 300 kilograms of trash were collected at Bitan-ag Creek, Coastal Area. This activity was done simultaneously with TMO Opol and Camiguin and Balingoan.
The International Coastal Cleanup is an annual celebration conducted every 3rd Saturday of September, where it encourages people around the world to come together to clean up coastlines and raise awareness about the impact of marine debris. In addition, MANA Mo is an important observance in September aimed at highlighting the Philippines’ vast maritime resources and the significance of the maritime industry. This year’s theme, “Pamana ng Karagatan: Para sa Kinabukasan, Ating Ingatan,” highlights the vital benefits our maritime and archipelagic nation offers. Our oceans offer essential resources, such as marine biodiversity, fisheries, and coral reefs, which are vital to our environment and ocean economy.
Plastic pollution is a massive problem for our ocean, but even small actions can make a big difference. Every bottle, every straw, every piece of trash you clean up can lead to a cleaner, healthier ocean. Thus, the PPA PMO MOC continues to actively participate in coastal clean-up initiatives. These efforts aim to promote environmental awareness and sustainability in coastal areas. By engaging in clean-up activities, the PPA PMO not only helps protect marine ecosystems but also encourages community involvement in preserving the natural beauty of the coastline.
