The Port Management Office of Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro and Terminal Management Office of Balingoan actively participated in the conduct of the 3rd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) last 26 September 2024 at 0900H Philippine Standard Time. Pursuant to the provisions of Republic Act No. 10121 otherwise known as the “Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010”, the conduct of the drill brings emphasis on risk preparedness and reduction.
The earthquake drill commenced at 0900H at PMO MOC Admin Building 1 through the activation of the building fire alarms for one (1) minute. All PMO MOC Personnel including other port stakeholders, performed the “Duck, Cover, and Hold On” maneuver until the alarms halted. Participants immediately exited the building in a timely and orderly manner and proceeded to the identified evacuation area. Headcount and infrastructure assessment were done right after. The Command Center conducted a net call on status and/or damage reports to all concerned RCs at different areas of the port. The drill officially terminated at 0906 H.
This exercise is an essential part towards disaster resilience. The 3rd Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill was an avenue to showcase the improvements from the previous quarter’s drill, recognize additional risk patterns, and resolve these issues with the aid of the PMO MOC Personnel and other stakeholders. By conducting these drills, the port can significantly reduce the risks posed by earthquakes and ensure the continuity of trade operations during and after seismic events which in time, will lead to a disaster-ready port.
