In consonance with Rule 6, Section 7 of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of RA 10121 regarding the campaign to promote widespread public awareness on disaster preparedness, response and recovery exercises, the Port of Cagayan de Oro and it’s Terminal Management Offices (TMO’s) in Balingoan, Camiguin and Opol participated in the 1Q-2025 Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on 13 March 2025 at 3:00 P.M. It was then followed by a Fire Drill at the PMO MOC Admin Bldg. No.1 at Baseport in commemoration of the Fire Prevention Month.
The drills emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness and coordinated actions during emergencies with the objectives to reinforces teamwork with the responding units and to improve emergency response plan.
The earthquake drill began with the activation of the building fire alarm and CHO siren, signaling participants to execute the Duck, Cover, and Hold On procedure. After the shaking simulation, personnel evacuated in an orderly manner to the designated evacuation area, where a headcount was then conducted. Status reports were given by designated RC heads, and the earthquake drill was successfully concluded by the PPA Station Commander at 1507H.
A fire emergency drill followed the earthquake drill. The drill scenario was a short circuit due to the strong earthquake started a fire at the PMO admin Bldg. 1 causing the reactivation of the building’s fire alarm. A security guard verified the source of smoke and alerted ComCen, which then notified the PMO Fire Brigade. The PMO Fire Brigade arrived at the scene and immediately secured the area and extinguished the fire. PPA Station Commander then declared the fire drill officially terminated at 1514H.
Personnel from the BFP Station 5 acted as observers for the drills commended the PMO for its well-coordinated execution of the drill, emphasizing the swift response of personnel, the proper use of safety gear, and the orderly evacuation process. They also noted the professionalism and teamwork demonstrated throughout the exercise. While there were areas identified for improvement, these observations were seen as opportunities to further strengthen the port’s emergency preparedness.
The drill reflects PMO’s strong commitment to safety and preparedness, reinforcing the importance of teamwork in protecting stakeholders during emergencies and part of the management’s thrust to a Sustainable, Efficient and Admirable (SEA) transport and travel experience for the port stakeholders.
