On September 16, 2024, at approximately 1440H, the vessel MV SUPER SHUTTLE FERRY 9 departed from the Port of Balingoan, en route to the Port of Benoni. The ship was carrying 107 passengers and 12 rolling cargoes. Approximately 80 minutes into the voyage, at around 1520H, the helmsman noticed that the steering system was unresponsive. The crew immediately inspected and discovered that the steering malfunction was due to a burst hydraulic hose.
Due to the adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and very rough seas, the vessel began to drift. At this point, MV SUPER SHUTTLE FERRY 9 was situated approximately 2 nautical miles from the shoreline of Sipaca Point, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental.
In response to the emergency, the crew called for assistance from the sister vessel MV SUPER SHUTTLE FERRY 24, which was stationed at the Port of Benoni. Due to the challenging weather conditions, MV SUPER SHUTTLE FERRY 24 was unable to reach MV SUPER SHUTTLE FERRY 9 immediately. It arrived at the scene at 1724H.
At around 1800H, the tow operation commenced. MV SUPER SHUTTLE FERRY 24 successfully towed MV SUPER SHUTTLE FERRY 9 towards the Port of Benoni. The tow was completed safely, and MV SUPER SHUTTLE FERRY 9, along with all passengers and cargo, arrived at the Port of Benoni at approximately 2220H. All 107 passengers and 12 rolling cargoes were disembarked and unloaded without any reported injuries or pollution.
