As part of the Maritime Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo) 2024 celebration, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) through the Terminal Management Office of Balingoan hosted a Port Educational Tour on September 26, 2024. The event was attended by students from Balingoan  Community College, providing them with a unique opportunity to explore and learn about the operations and facilities of the port.

The tour aimed to raise awareness among the youth about the vital role of ports in national development and maritime trade. It featured a comprehensive introduction to the port’s services, infrastructure, and operational procedures. Students were given an inside look at the day-to-day activities of the terminal, from cargo handling to passenger management, and were able to witness firsthand the intricacies of port operations.

A highlight of the tour was the students’ participation in the Inter-Agency Operability and Capability Simulation Exercise 2024. This exercise demonstrated the coordinated efforts of various agencies in managing emergency situations and showcased the preparedness and collaboration of port personnel and stakeholders. The students observed how different agencies worked together in handling simulated scenarios, such as emergency evacuations and response to maritime incidents, providing them with a practical understanding of crisis management and the importance of inter-agency cooperation.

In addition to the SimEx, the students had the opportunity to explore a vessel docked at the port. Guided by the vessel’s captain, they learned about the different parts of the ship, its navigational equipment, and the safety protocols followed on board. The captain also shared insights into the daily responsibilities of the crew and the challenges they face while at sea, enriching the students’ understanding of life on a maritime vessel.

During the port visit, the students also engaged with PPA personnel, who shared their expertise and experiences in port management. This interaction allowed the students to gain valuable insights into the challenges and responsibilities of working in the maritime industry, as well as the importance of safety and efficiency in port operations.

The event was part of a broader initiative by the PPA to promote maritime education and inspire the next generation of maritime professionals. By opening its doors to the students of Balingoan Community College, the PPA hopes to foster a deeper understanding of the port’s contribution to the local economy and its significance as a gateway for trade and travel in the region.

The Port Educational Tour at the Balingoan Terminal Office was not only an educational experience but also a celebration of the maritime heritage of the Philippines. It underscored the theme of MANA Mo 2024, which highlights the country’s rich maritime culture and its pivotal role as an archipelagic nation. As the students departed, they expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to learn about both the port’s operations and the vessel’s intricacies, as well as their involvement in the SimEx.
