The Department of Health Northern Mindanao conducted a Basic Life Support Training for all personnel of the Port Management Office of Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro on Friday, 08 July 2022 at the 2nd Floor of the Port Terminal Building for the first batch and the GAD Hall, PMO Admin Building 2 for the second batch.

During the first half of the training, Mr. Reymart Uban and Eugene Bajao, certified BLS Trainers, discussed on the Principles of Emergency Care, Introduction to Basic Life Support, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, and Automated External Defibrillation. The participants were oriented on the importance of the training and the basic skills and knowledge that will be applied during emergency cases.

The first topic during the training is the Emergency Action Principles, which enumerate the steps to be taken when an emergency has occurred. According to Mr. Uban, upon recognition of an emergency, a certified BLS provider should identify if the area is safe for the victim, assess the nature of the incident, activate medical assistance prior to administering first aid for specific medical advice, check for other injuries or conditions that may be detrimental to the victim’s life, and lastly, once the healthcare provider arrives, properly refer the victim to the emergency team or the nearest health facility.

For the BLS trainers to assess the participants’ knowledge, a post-training examination was done wherein an actual demonstration of the 5 steps in Emergency Action is executed as well as the proper utilization of medical equipment. Each participant was given different scenarios and must be able to execute and explain every step of the Emergency Action Principles for them to be certified as BLS providers.

At the end of the training, Mr. Eugene Bajao, one of the BLS trainers from Oro Rescue, expressed his utmost gratitude to the PMO personnel for participating in the whole-day activity. He was impressed with their dedication and interest in Basic Life Support and reminded them that in emergency cases, it is always important to assess the situation and ensure the safety of both the victim and BLS provider.-BCAcedera
