The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted a pivotal interview with the Port Management Office of Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro (PMO MOC) on September 18, 2024, to discuss their ongoing environmental initiatives under the Port Safety, Health, and Environmental Management System (PSHEMS).

This initiative has been adopted in collaboration with the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), marking the port’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly practices. During the interview, Port Manager Isidro V. Butaslac Jr. and Port Services Division Manager Ruby Maria O. Gumapon shared their insights on PMO MOC’s environmental programs. Both highlighted the alignment of these initiatives with the strategic goals of the PMO MOC, ensuring that sustainability efforts are embedded in all port operations. PMO MOC also presented audiovisual presentations (AVPs) that showcased the office’s various environmental efforts.

The interview was part of a broader effort led by the DENR’s Foreign-Assisted and Special Projects Service (FASPS), which is currently conducting sustainability monitoring and assessment of completed foreign-assisted and special projects across select regions, including Region 10. One key project under review is the “Scaling-Up Implementation of the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Seas of East Asia (SDS-SEA) in the Philippines,” implemented by PEMSEA from 2014 to 2020.

The DENR also conducted the PSHEMS Exit Conference, presenting the highlights and preliminary data analysis gathered throughout the monitoring activity. The PMO MOC has become a model for ecological responsibility, integrating its “Green Culture” through proactive environmental rehabilitation and restoration efforts.

The port’s environmental activities, meticulously planned and executed annually, reflect its enduring dedication to safeguarding the region’s natural resources while maintaining operational excellence.
