Cagayan de Oro City | Today, 30 November 2023, the Philippine Ports Authority Port Management Office of Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro (PPA PMO MO/C) conducted an Oil Spill Awareness Orientation at the GAD Hall, Building 2, PPA. This was attended by personnel from PMO MO/C, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, Oroport Cargo Handling Services Incorporated, Moreta Shipping Lines Inc., Gothong Southern Shipping Lines Inc., and Philippine Span Asia Carrier Corporation, and with the presence of Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) officers as Resource Speakers namely: Coast Guard Petty Officer 1 Luigi Myles Hope Mojica, Coast Guard Seaman 1 Al Junn Paul De la Rosa, and Coast Guard Petty Officer 1 Roy Nathaniel Sardoma.
In order to promote a safer and more sustainable maritime environment, the aforementioned orientation seeks to increase awareness and readiness for oil spill incidents within the port area. This is also in compliance with the continuous and effective implementation of the Integrated Management System (IMS), and in celebration of the World Sustainable Transport Day.
Last 26 November 2023 was the first United Nations (UN) World Sustainable Transport Day, a day established in response to the gap in global transportation options, the effect that transportation has on climate change and a thorough and integrated approach towards a greener future.
It is the goal of the maritime sector to protect the Philippines’ resources and a healthy, balanced marine environment by preventing, reducing, and mitigating pollution in the sea, rivers, and tributaries. With this orientation, the participants has gained knowledge on the following discussions shared by the Resource Speakers: Roles on Environmental Protection; different issued PCG Memorandum Circulars, a regulatory measure to prevent, control and mitigate marine pollution; impact of oil spills in the marine and coastal environment; environmental sensitivity index; and response strategies/options.
Further, the orientation emphasized the importance of working together in helping in protecting our ocean. The ocean affects us every day with every breath we take, every drop of water we drink, and every bite we eat—even if we aren’t able to see or touch it directly. All people are completely dependent on the ocean for their survival and are intricately linked to it.
The PPA PMO MO/C will continue to uphold its obligations and provide assistance to the maritime sector in safeguarding the ocean in a manner that will improve its health and, consequently, ensure humankind’s future. Health to the ocean means health for everyone.
