Cagayan de Oro– The Port Management Office of Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro City (PMO MO/C), together with partners and stakeholders celebrated the opening of the 2023 National Maritime Week Celebration today, September 25, 2023 at the Passenger Terminal Building, with the theme, “MARPOL at 50- Our Commitment goes on.’’
The festivities began at 7:00 a.m. with the traditional “Dressing-up of Ships,” “Blowing of Horns,” and “Floral Offering at the Sea,” which were held at the dockside of the Port of Cagayan de Oro City. The dressing-up of ships is a symbolical exhibition of several International Maritime Signal Flags used to communicate and send brief messages to ships at sea. This was followed by a Eucharistic Celebration, presided by Msgr. Eutiquiano M. Legitimas.
The Regional Director of MARINA, Ms. Annabelle P. Lagas welcomed the participants namely the Philippine Ports Authority, (PPA), Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), Coast Guard District Northern Mindanao (CGDNM), Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation (PSPC), Capitol University (CU) Maritime Students, Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA), 1001st Auxiliary Squadron (PCGA), Stella Maris – Apostleship of the Sea, and Cagayan Harbor Pilots, Inc. (CHPI). The IMO Secretary-General also shared an inspiring virtual message honoring the event. The Guest of Honor, Vice Mayor Jocelyn B. Rodriguez delivered her message and emphasized their continued support and collaboration with the maritime sector in the years to come.
The National Maritime Week Celebration in Cagayan de Oro City is more than just an event; it reflects the city’s commitment to sustainable development, environmental protection, and the promotion of local tourism. As we celebrate MARPOL’s 50th anniversary, we are reminded of our commitment to protect our seas.
On the same day, the PMO MO/C also launched the #PPASYALTAYO PPA’s Tourism Campaign together with 25 PMOs all over the Philippines. This campaign aims to promote tourism in the region and showcase the beauty and diversity of Cagayan de Oro City and its surrounding areas. It is a testament to the city’s commitment to fostering tourism while ensuring sustainable development. The virtual event started with the showcase of different chants from other PMOs and was followed by the unveiling of the mural at the Passenger Terminal Building. This artistic endeavor serves as a symbol of Cagayan de Oro City’s vibrant culture. This event was spearheaded by Head Office Corporate Communication Services (HO CCS).
