The Port Management of Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro (PMO MOC) hosted the 4th Quarter Joint Meeting of the Port & Maritime Management Advisory Council (PMMAC) and Port Security Advisory Committee (PSAC) on November 19, 2024. The event, held at the GAD Hall Building 2, marked a significant milestone as it was the first time these two key committees convened face-to-face since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The meeting brought together 67 participants, comprising representatives from various sectors involved in port operations and security. Among the attendees were officials from PMO MOC which was headed by the Acting Port Manager, Fernando Mapalo Jr., cargo handling operators (OROPORT), shipping line companies, port locators like Shell Pilipinas Corp and TAO Foods, and law enforcement agencies, including the Philippine National Police (PNP), PNP Regional Mobile Unit 10 (PNP RMU 10), the Philippine Army (PA), the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). The meeting was also graced with the participation of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA 10), PIEMO Harbor Pilots, Stella Maris, and the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental.

The 4th Quarter meeting covered important topics affecting the port’s operations, security, and overall development. Among the key discussion points were Maritime Updates in which participants shared the latest developments in the maritime industry. A significant portion of the meeting was also dedicated to updates on ongoing and planned infrastructure projects aimed at improving the facilities and capacity of PMO MOC. These developments are critical to maintaining the port’s role as a vital trade and transportation hub in Mindanao. The OTS Transport Security Alert Advisory 2024-11 was also expounded. This advisory outlined the latest transport security guidelines and protocols, especially for the upcoming holiday season, to ensure that both passengers and cargo are protected from potential threats. The meeting also addressed a request from the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Macabalan regarding the entry of public utility buses into the Passenger Terminal Complex. This proposal, aimed at improving passenger convenience, is currently under review as stakeholders consider the impact on logistics, passenger flow, and security. A new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was also discussed, focusing on how to effectively communicate cancellations of vessel trips due to inclement weather. The goal is to ensure that passengers are promptly informed, minimizing inconvenience and enhancing the overall travel experience. The meeting also included an update on the cases handled by the Port Police during the year, providing insights into the security situation at the port and highlighting any challenges or successes in maintaining order and safety.

The Acting Port Manager, Fernando Mapalo Jr., delivered a key message emphasizing the Port Management’s direction under his leadership. He introduced the vision for a Sustainable, Efficient, and Admirable (SEA) Transport and Travel Experience, which aligns with the National Government’s “Bagong Pilipinas” agenda. This direction underscores the commitment of PMO MOC to not only improve the operational efficiency of the port but also to create a more sustainable and passenger-friendly environment.

The face-to-face gathering marked a successful return to in-person meetings after the pandemic, symbolizing the resilience and determination of the maritime sector to move forward and adapt to new challenges.
