The Philippine Ports Authority Port Management Office of Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro (PPA PMO MOC), together with other local government units, national government agencies, private sectors, community stakeholders and various civil society organizations participated in a simultaneous Coastal Clean-up Drive spearheaded by Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region X today, May 10, 2024 in celebration of the Month of the Ocean 2024. The activity was participated by 16 PMO MOC personnel, wherein a total of 24 trash bags with 1,200 kilograms of trash were collected at Bitan-ag Creek, Coastal Area.

The Coastal Clean-up Drive is in accordance with Presidential Proclamation No. 57, series of 1998, which designates May as the Month of the Ocean each year. This proclamation acknowledges the economic and ecological benefits that our country receives from its coastal and marine resources.

In addition, as part if its ongoing commitment to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and its message, “The Science We Need for the Ocean We Want,” the DENR has adopted the UNESCO Ocean Decade Challenge 4, “Develop a Sustainable and Equitable Blue Economy.”

The Coastal Clean-up activity at Bitan-ag Creek which empties into Macajalar Bay is in compliance with PMO’s Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC), stating the protection of Macajalar Bay.

The Ocean is not only a food source, but also “the lungs of the planet.” It is responsible for 50% of oxygen production, 25% of carbon dioxide absorption, and 90% of excess heat, serves as a crucial carbon sink and buffer against climate change impacts.

The PMO MOC is firm with its commitment to continuously adhere and take action in conserving and protecting our ocean. Preserving the ocean is not only about preserving marine life; but also about securing the future of the next generations.
